World Champs - Day 2

We rose early with the sparrows, they start chirping here at about 4am. The sun rises early here too so it was a fantastic swim session at Southport outdoor salt water pool with the sun on our backs. Some of the internationals were causing trouble swimming up the wrong side of the lane but we surely can't expect any less! This could have become problematic when the early morning sun blinded us as it reflected off the nearby highrises but luckily there were no headclashes. Laugh-a-minute had suffered the misfortune of a puncture on the way to the pool. One of the Veronicas offered a dink back to the apartment and the horrified look on the face of our new Canadian buddy told us that word means something entirely different in Canadian-speak! Priceless.

Arriving back at the ranch the day stretched endlessly in front of us as we struggled to cope with the concept of relaxation. The Veronicas found solace in caffeine at one of the many local cafe's while Laugh-a-minute went in search of a bike shop to find a single. Our thoughts then turned to food in typical triathlete fashion so mama and the Veronicas wrote out their shopping list and headed off to the supermarket. A funny sight indeed as the three trotted off down the road with an empty pram in tow. A kind gentleman tried to assist mama load her pram onto the bus, little did he realise that there was no baby only shopping inside.

The Yarra group expanded for our afternoon ride session with the arrival of Esquire and the Old Boy. The bunch enjoyed the warm afternoon sun in the company of some Germans who I'm sure had no idea what our calls of "car back" meant as they insisted on riding towards the middle of the road. There was a little road work going on in our out and back section of the spit so there could have been frustration at the road crew as they flipped their 'stop' and 'slow' signs. But no - they took great pride in ensuring we weren't delayed as we rode up and back each lap by flipping their signs at precisely the right moment. One of the crew even called out our splits each lap, I'm not sure he got them right but it was certainly keeping him and us entertained. I think his biggest concern was that we beat the Russians???

Another early night - the Veronicas claim they need their beauty sleep but what's the boys excuse? Tune in again tomorrow for the next installment in the "Yarra Crew does GC" story.

World Champs - Day 1

We thought the Gold Coast was supposed to be hot? 20 degrees the airhostess tells us as we land. Great, this is like Vancouver all over again! So here we were: Laugh-a-minute, mama and papa and the Veronicas contemplating a swim in the 8 foot surf at Main Beach or a pool swim. Which would you choose? The surf of course for us hard nuts. So wetsuits on, yes the local boys looked at us sideways, we felt like Patrick Swayze in Point Break walking towards the surf in a 100 year storm. The session was short lived as Laugh-a-minute and half of the Veronicas didn't make it out past the break.

So with sand in all the wrong places we swapped goggles for runners and hit the road. As our heartrates increased so did the heat and we finally felt like we were in the right place. Like all good pre-race sessions this one was short and sweet and without incident.

Transistion already looks schmick, as do all the bikes cruising around town.Talk about bike porn!

We ended day 1 with a big bowl of pasta and an early night - textbook for triathletes. Tune in again tomorrow as more Yarra crew arrive to join in the chaos.
